Bitcoin Cash (BCH) was created in 2017 through a fork of Bitcoin, which means the network split into two separate chains that shared the same history up to that point and then went their own ways. The split grew out of a long and heated debate within the Bitcoin community about how the network should grow to handle more users.
At the centre of that debate was block size, the amount of transaction data each block can hold. Bitcoin Cash raised the block size so more transactions could fit into each one, aiming to keep fees low and confirmations quick even as usage climbed. The goal was to make the coin practical for everyday spending, closer to the electronic-cash idea sketched out in Bitcoin’s original white paper.
In its foundations, Bitcoin Cash resembles Bitcoin: it is secured by proof-of-work mining and has a capped supply. Where it diverges is in its roadmap and priorities, which lean toward being usable as money for small, frequent payments rather than primarily a long-term store of value.
Bitcoin Cash is worth understanding less for its size today and more for what it represents: a real, unresolved disagreement about what a cryptocurrency should optimise for.
