USD Coin, known by its ticker USDC, is one of the major US-dollar stablecoins. Like others of its kind, it is meant to trade at about one dollar and is used widely across trading, payments and decentralised finance. It is issued by Circle, a regulated financial-technology company, which gives it a somewhat different profile from stablecoins run by less transparent operators.
Circle says it holds cash and short-term US government bonds at regulated financial institutions to back the token. Just as importantly, it publishes regular attestations about those holdings, offering more visibility than several competitors provide. That leaning toward transparency and a regulated model is a big part of why USDC is often viewed as one of the more conservative options in the category.
Because it exists on many blockchains and moves around easily, USDC has become a common building block within DeFi and a familiar on-ramp for newcomers who simply want to hold dollars on-chain. For a lot of people it is the stablecoin they reach for when they want steadiness without leaving the crypto ecosystem entirely.
None of that makes it entirely without risk.
