The project was co-founded by Charles Hoskinson, who was also an early co-founder of Ethereum, and it is developed by a group of organisations including Input Output (IOHK).
The engine that keeps Cardano running is a consensus protocol called Ouroboros, which was designed with that same academic scrutiny in mind.
