Its defining trait is a research-first culture: many of the ideas behind the network are published as academic papers and put through peer review before they ship. The project was co-founded by Charles Hoskinson, who was also an early co-founder of Ethereum, and it is developed by a group of organisations including Input Output (IOHK).
The engine that keeps Cardano running is a consensus protocol called Ouroboros, which was designed with that same academic scrutiny in mind. On top of it, the network supports smart contracts and decentralised applications, so developers can build tokens and services on Cardano much as they would on other programmable chains.
