Maker (MKR) is the governance token behind one of the most important protocols in decentralised finance — the system (from the MakerDAO, now Sky, ecosystem) that issues the DAI stablecoin. MKR holders vote on how that system is run, including its risk parameters and collateral types.
MKR also plays a role in the system’s stability: in certain conditions it can act as a backstop, with new MKR issued to recapitalise the protocol if its collateral falls short, or MKR bought and removed when the system is healthy. This ties MKR’s supply to the protocol’s performance.
